Trash and recycling runs

Trash and recycling runs, done right.

Overflowing bins are one of the fastest ways for a building to look neglected. Scheduled trash and recycling runs keep everything moving.

Dominion porters collect from common-area bins, breakrooms and mailrooms, consolidate to your trash and recycling areas, replace liners and keep collection rooms tidy.

Combine with restroom checks and lobby upkeep for a complete daytime porter route.

Step by step

How it works.

01

Find the bins

Common areas, breakrooms, mailrooms and copy rooms.

02

Time the runs

Before lunch, after lunch and at the end of the day are the usual peaks.

03

Collect and consolidate

Bins emptied, liners replaced and everything taken to your collection rooms.

04

Tidy the trash room

Cardboard broken down and collection rooms kept orderly.

Timing runs to the building’s day.

Bins fill on a schedule, so runs should too. Breakrooms load up right after lunch. Copy rooms and mailrooms fill with paper and packaging mid-morning, when deliveries land. Common-area bins near entrances take coffee cups through the arrival rush. Each run is timed to reach a bin before it reaches the top.

Back of house is where buildings lose control. Cardboard stacks up by the mailroom, liners run out and the collection room turns into a pile. Porters keep those rooms orderly between hauler pickups, so the trash room becomes one more space that stays presentable.

How the run changes by property.

In an office tower, runs focus on breakrooms and copy rooms. At a warehouse in Stockton or Sparks, cardboard and shift-change breakrooms drive the schedule. Apartment buildings need trash rooms and chute areas kept tidy for residents. Retail centers in Elk Grove or Roseville add food court bins and the exterior bins out in the lot.

Trash runs pair naturally with restroom rounds on one daytime route, and with exterior porter coverage when the dumpster enclosures sit out on the back lot.

What trash and recycling runs cost

Daytime trash and recycling runs are billed as porter-hours, at the same rate as the rest of a porter route. Across our service area that rate typically runs $31 to $47 an hour, according to 2026 published market data, lower in Nevada and the Central Valley and higher on the Peninsula and in the South Bay. The runs can stand alone or fold into a day porter post.

Run the math on a 30,000-square-foot multi-tenant office in downtown Sacramento with two breakrooms per floor and a basement trash room. A porter making a 90-minute run after the lunch rush and a 30-minute run at the end of the day, five days a week, works about 43 hours a month. At $36 an hour that comes to roughly $1,560.

Waste volume is the biggest lever. California’s organic waste rules have added a compost stream to commercial buildings, which means more handling at every bin, and a contaminated bag has to be re-sorted before it goes out. Distance from the floors to the trash room, freight elevator access, cardboard breakdown after deliveries and compactor upkeep all add time. So do the number of bins per floor and how fast breakrooms fill. A building with central bins and a short haul sits lower. We walk the floors and the trash room, then put the run schedule and the price in your porter plan.

A few useful answers

Common questions.

Do you separate recycling?

Yes. Trash and recycling go out on the same run and stay in their own streams, following your building’s setup, all the way to the collection rooms.

Can runs be scheduled around peak times?

Yes, we time runs around lunch and other busy periods.

How do you handle compost under California's organics rules?

In California buildings, food scraps get their own bin. Porters keep them out of the trash and recycling, re-sort any bag that comes in mixed and stage the organics bins for pickup.

Do you break down cardboard?

Yes. Boxes are broken down on every run, and the trash and recycling rooms are kept orderly between hauler pickups.

Can trash runs cover tenant suites?

Yes. Tell us which suites you want on the run and the porter adds them to the route.

What should we tell you about our hauler before we start?

Pickup days, where each stream goes and any rules for cardboard or recycling sorting. The porter route lines up with those, so collection rooms are ready on pickup day.
